In Five, five strangers stand on a train platform, and the next train to London, due in five minutes, will kill one of them. Before it arrives, the novel tells each person’s story: a young man close to gambling his life away, an elderly woman who has fallen but won’t accept help, a mother and her child in the middle of a tantrum, and a successful businessman with hidden damage. Speaking directly to the reader, Bannister asks who deserves to live, while exploring motherhood, disability, and addiction.
