Social Action

B’nai Torah MetroWest is deeply committed to social action and making a positive impact on our community and beyond. We are guided by the values of justice, compassion, and equality. At BTM, we believe that Judaism calls upon us to actively engage in tikkun olam, the repair of the world, and we seek to embody the value of tzedakah (charitable giving).

We understand that social action is not merely a one-time act, but a lifelong commitment. Through our various initiatives, we strive to address the pressing issues of our time, including poverty, hunger, homelessness, environmental sustainability, and social justice. Our commitment to social action extends beyond our synagogue walls, and we collaborate with local organizations, non-profits, and advocacy groups to amplify our impact.

B’nai Torah MetroWest is a member of RAC-MA — the Religious Action Center of Massachusetts. The Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism (the RAC) has worked to educate, inspire, and mobilize the Reform Jewish Movement to advocate for social justice. A chapter of the RAC for the state of Massachusetts (RAC-MA) was started in 2022. RAC-MA recently launched a campaign to focus on the issue of Housing Justice. In the coming months, BTM along with 40 other congregations and approximately 65,000 Reform Jews in the Commonwealth will work together to pass legislation to support Housing Justice for all residents of Massachusetts.

At BTM, we are dedicated to promoting a more just and equitable world, guided by our Jewish values and a commitment to uplifting the vulnerable, challenging systemic injustices, and fostering a more compassionate society for all—and we hope you will join us in our efforts! There can never be enough hands!

Some of our recent efforts have included:

Collections for Family Table: JF&CS Family Table Food Pantry is New England’s largest kosher food pantry, providing healthy food on a monthly and emergency basis to individuals and families in need, regardless of religious affiliation.

Diaper and Wipes Collection for A Place To Turn Food Pantry, an emergency food pantry in Natick, MA.

Sudbury-Wayland-Lincoln Domestic Violence Roundtable’s Showers for Shelters Collection— A drive to collect items for families who are victims of domestic violence, to help them transition from emergency shelter to their own homes in our local communities.

High Holy Days Food Collection – A non-perishable food collection at the High Holy Days for four local food pantries: Sudbury Food Pantry, Pearl Street Cupboard and Café at Park (The United Way of Tri-County), and A Place to Turn in Natick, and JF&CS Family Food Table Table. Bags were handed out a Rosh Hashanah and filled and returned by members on Yom Kippur, traditionally a day of fasting.
